Product Description
Sodium methoxide, also known as sodium methoxy or sodium methoxide, has the chemical formula CH₃ONa and is the sodium salt of methanol. It is one of the simplest alkoxides. Sodium methoxide appears as a white, amorphous powder; it is sensitive to air and moisture and reacts very readily with oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Sodium methoxide undergoes a violent hydrolysis reaction upon contact with water, producing methanol and sodium hydroxide. It decomposes further in air at temperatures above 126°C. It is soluble in methanol and ethanol but insoluble in benzene and toluene.
Commercial products are available in two forms: solid sodium methoxide powder (high purity ≥96%) and sodium methoxide solution (commonly 25% or 30% concentration). The solid powder must be stored in a sealed container, while the solution requires protection with an inert gas. Sodium methoxide has high catalytic activity and is commonly used as a condensation agent, esterification catalyst, and methoxylation reagent. It is widely applied in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, fragrance, dye, biodiesel transesterification, and fine organic synthesis industries.
