MTBE as a Fuel Oxygenate and Solvent
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE, CAS 1634-04-4) boosts octane and adds oxygen to gasoline, improving combustion and reducing carbon monoxide emissions in petrol engines. Outside fuel blending, MTBE is a versatile extraction solvent for recovering high-purity products and a reaction medium in fine chemistry.
Typical Quality Parameters
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Purity | ≥99.9% |
| Water | ≤0.03% |
| Methanol | ≤0.05% |
| Sulfur | ≤5 ppm |
| Specific gravity (20°C) | 0.740–0.745 |
Main Application Areas
- Gasoline blending: Octane enhancer and oxygenate, typically blended at 2–15% volume.
- Extraction solvent: Recovery of pharmaceutical and fine chemical products, and as a process solvent.
- Laboratory use: Anhydrous reaction medium in organometallic and Grignard chemistry.
Packaging and Export
MTBE is a highly flammable liquid (UN 2398, Class 3, PG II). Export in 200 L UN-certified steel drums, IBCs or ISO tank. COA, SDS, DG declaration and UN packaging provided per shipment.
