Similar Hydrocarbons, Different Process Behavior
n-Heptane and n-Hexane are straight-chain, nonpolar hydrocarbon solvents, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. n-Heptane has seven carbon atoms and boils near 98°C, while n-Hexane has six carbon atoms and a substantially lower boiling point. The difference affects drying time, solvent recovery and process temperature.
Solvency and Validation
Both can dissolve many oils, rubber compounds and hydrocarbon resins. Actual performance depends on the full formulation, substrate and impurities. A change may affect coating flow, adhesive open time, extraction yield or residual solvent, so laboratory and production validation are needed.
Health and Regulatory Comparison
n-Hexane has a well-established peripheral-neurotoxicity concern and entered the EU REACH Candidate List in February 2026. n-Heptane does not automatically carry that same substance-specific status, but it remains highly flammable and can cause central-nervous-system effects at elevated exposure. Substitution should reduce overall risk rather than exchange one uncontrolled solvent for another.
