Why the Name “Hexane” Can Be Ambiguous
n-Hexane is a single straight-chain hydrocarbon identified by CAS 110-54-3. In trade, however, “hexane” can also describe mixed light-hydrocarbon streams containing n-Hexane, methylpentanes, dimethylbutanes, cyclohexane and other components. A product name alone is therefore not enough for technical qualification.
Composition Changes Performance
Different C6 distributions can alter boiling range, evaporation behavior, solvency and odor. A mixed extraction solvent may work well for one established process but may not meet a buyer seeking a high-n-Hexane assay. Conversely, specifying pure n-Hexane when a validated mixed grade is required can create unnecessary cost or regulatory consequences.

- CAS identity and full commercial product name
- n-Hexane assay and total C6 content
- Representative hydrocarbon composition
- Initial and final boiling points
- Benzene, sulfur, water and non-volatile residue limits
- Current SDS and destination-market status
Health Profile Also Matters
n-Hexane has a distinct repeated-exposure neurotoxicity concern. Buyers should not assume that every mixed hexane has the same hazard profile, but neither should they treat mixtures as automatically low risk. The exact SDS and composition must drive occupational and regulatory assessment.
