Why NMP for Lithium Battery Cathode Slurry
N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP, CAS 872-50-4) is the standard solvent for lithium-ion battery cathode manufacturing. It dissolves polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder uniformly, allows high solids loading in cathode slurries, and evaporates cleanly during electrode drying without leaving residue.
Electronic Grade vs Industrial Grade
| Parameter | Electronic Grade (Battery) | Industrial Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | ≥99.9% | ≥99.5% |
| Water content | ≤0.03% | ≤0.1% |
| Metal ions | ≤10 ppb each | Not controlled |
| Use case | Cathode slurry, electrolyte | General solvent, coatings |
Key Battery Applications
- Cathode slurry: Dissolves PVDF binder for NMC, LFP, NCA and LCO cathode formulations.
- Anode casting: Used when water-based CMC/SBR systems are not suitable.
- Electrolyte co-solvent: High dielectric constant for selected electrolyte formulations.
- Recycling: Recovered NMP is re-distilled; electronic grade specs must be reconfirmed.
Quality Points for Battery Buyers
- Batch COA showing water, purity, residual metals and APHA color.
- SDS and TDS for EHS review.
- Nitrogen-blanketed drums or IBC to prevent moisture pickup.
- UN-approved packaging for DG export.
Packaging and Export
Electronic grade NMP in 200 L nitrogen-blanketed steel drums (~180 kg net), 1000 L IBC totes, or ISO tank. Export docs: COA, SDS, packing list, commercial invoice, DG declaration. Trade terms: EXW, FOB Qingdao, CIF, CFR.
