Why DMF Dominates PU Synthetic Leather
N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF, CAS 68-12-2) is the dominant solvent in polyurethane (PU) synthetic leather manufacturing. It dissolves PU resin uniformly, controls film formation during coagulation, and is recovered via solvent recovery systems (SRS) for reuse. Its strong solvency and stable boiling point (153 C) make it difficult to replace in coastal and PU leather production lines.
Key Quality Parameters for PU Leather Grade
| Parameter | Typical PU Leather Grade |
|---|---|
| Purity | ≥99.9% |
| Water | ≤0.05% |
| Methanol | ≤0.01% |
| Acidity (as HCOOH) | ≤0.001% |
| Color (APHA) | ≤10 |
PU Leather Production Flow Where DMF Is Used
- Resin preparation: DMF dissolves PU resin and additives to form the casting solution.
- Coagulation bath: DMF is extracted into water during wet process, forming the porous micro-porous structure of synthetic leather.
- Recovery: DMF-water mixture is distilled; recovered DMF must meet same purity spec before reuse.
Quality Points for Buyers
- Batch COA showing purity, water, acidity and color.
- SDS for occupational exposure control (DMF is reproductive toxicity category 3).
- UN 2265 packaging (Class 3, PG III) for DG shipment.
- 200 L NTC-lined steel drum or ISO tank; nitrogen blanketing on request.
